Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam is a Latin phrase that means “For the Greater Glory of God”. It’s often shortened to ‘AMDG’. The Phrase is attributed to St. Ignatius of Loyola who is famed as the Founder of “The Society of Jesus Christ” popularly known as Jesuit. The Full statement contains a suffix, “Ad maiorem Dei gloriam inque hominum salute” which means, “for the greater glory of God and the salvation of humanity”. This is a statement that tallies with the words of the Apostle Paul when he wrote, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” – 1 Cor 10:31 The Preposition of the above statement is that everything happens for God’s greater glory. The salvation of humanity – returning of Souls to God – serves to fulfil that purpose. God is supreme and in control of the universe. All that happens Good, bad and evil ultimately serves his Glory. He is constantly working good out of every circumstance and that good is his glory! This statement also proposes that we should do everything for God’s glory. We are in a generation where we are always seeking to do good and make an impact. One guard rail for this is to live for God’s glory. It is incompatible to live for God’s glory and partake in sin or destructive activities so looking forward to God’s greater glory as the Joy set before us since we will one day share in this glory is a mantra that helps us set our focus right and do things that will bring God glory! The last angle of this statement can be found in the words of the Psalmist in the opening verse of Psalm 115. “Not to us, O LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness” The Phrase AMDG serves to remind us constantly to channel the glory properly to God. Ultimately the Glory belongs to God. We need to daily remind ourselves that the Glory is God’s because of his love and its varied expressions to us and our world especially his faithfulness. As we seek to Give God Glory, it’s easy for us to keep some of the glory unconsciously and Let our lights shine before men that they may see our good deeds and praise us on earth below. An AMDG mindset is a guard rail against this too. In this work of Art – this album titled AMDG by my brother David Streetz Dung, Every song is aimed at extolling and proclaiming God’s Greater Glory. In a constantly self-centred generation, it’s important to fix our eyes on God and this Album which is music one of the most potent forms of art seeks to do that. Listen and be edified and fix your eyes again ultimately on God’s Glory.
